COCONUT OIL -OUR FAVORITE

We all have a jar of coconut oil by now, right? Are you wondering what else to do with it? Here at CAN CAN we currently have four favorites:
Trying to be good is hard! Sometimes you just need a little chocolate! When your sweet tooth is calling...whip up some of these wholesome tasty bits instead of cheating. I'd bet you have everything you need in your pantry right now. You'll feel better in no time!
Sprouted Kitchen's Cocoa Coconut Bits
A great whole food snack that is sugar-free and provides fiber and antioxidants. Movie time or any time!
- 4 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1/2 cup organic, non-GMO popcorn
Heat half of the coconut oil in your largest heavy bottomed soup pot. Drop in 1 or 2 kernels of corn and wait until 1 pops (your oil is now hot enough). Add the rest of the kernels. Cover the pot and carefully shake until the popping almost stops. Slowly remove lid and watch for steam. Add the rest of the oil and salt to taste. Toss to coat. Add nutritional yeast for a cheeze-y treat like they used to at The Red Vic movie theatre on Haight Street!
So, every day we are reading another blog about oil puling. If you're still in the dark... Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic dental technique native to India that's been around for over 3,000 years. It involves swishing oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for 20 minutes. This action draws out toxins in your body, primarily to improve oral health but also to improve overall health. The reported benefits include:
- Whiter teeth
- Cavity and gingivitis prevention
- Better breath
- Stronger teeth and gums
- Less jaw pain (TMJ sufferers noted great improvement), sleep problems and sinus issues
- Alleviation of headaches, hangovers and skin issues (reports show improvement in acne, psoriasis and eczema)
Finally, I decided to try it myself. Opened my jar of coconut oil and scooped about 2 teaspoons in my mouth. Let it melt. Ewww. OK, now start swishing. Start the timer for 20 minutes. It's a little weird, but not too bad. Here's what you can do in 20 minutes...clean up from breakfast including a sink full of dishes. Get dressed, apply eyeliner and mascara...still 9 minutes left...you CAN do it! Check facebook, that's the best time killer...we all know that. Timer's beeping-YAY! Spit into garbage...wait, do I rinse after? Check, yes, with warm water and salt. Brush and floss. That wasn't that bad. Thinking I'll pack up a bit and do it on my way home from the gym tomorrow. Swishing while driving should be easy. And, really? Do my teeth look a little whiter. Yes, they do! And, they feel like I just got done with a cleaning at the dentisit.
I'll save you the research on the science behind it. The conclusion of this NIH study: Oil pulling can be used as an effective preventative adjunct in maintaing and improving oral health.
There are so many uses (hundreds, in fact) for coconut oil. I'm using it now as a base of a body exfoliating scrub for dry skin.
Find the most coarse salt you can and add equal parts metled coconut oil. That's it. But the possibilites are endless, as far as scents. Add any essential oil or if you will use it all within a few days, lemon or grapefruit zest and any dried or fresh herb. Rosemary and grapefruit is amazing! Be sure to put it in a container you can safely bring in the shower. Shave your legs, use your scrub as vigorously as you can handle and shave your legs again. You won't beleive how much dead skin comes off! Pat dry to leave damp and follow with more coconut oil as moisturizer. You will have the softest skin ever!
