A HANDY GUIDE TO SF’S HEALTHIEST RESTAURANTS
May 06, 2014
So you’ve adapted a healthy lifestyle, you’ve been cooking up a storm and now you want to take a break and celebrate out in the world. Where to go from here? When it comes to eating out, San Francisco has many options; Chinese, Thai, sushi, Mexican, ramen, salads, sandwiches, Italian! It can be very overwhelming, especially if you are trying to find a place that accommodates all of your needs to eat clean and healthy. To help you navigate, I’ve compiled a list of restaurants to give you a jumping off point into the sea of healthy dining.
Who doesn’t love Mexican food? Even though sometimes we love greasy, cheesy, sour creamy Mexican food it can be pretty hard on the belly, and not always the wisest choice. Gracias Madre is a local, organic, vegan, Mexican food restaurant located at 18th and Mission. It’s Mexican food without all of the unhealthy drawbacks. Think of tacos filled with your choice of greens, broccoli, mushrooms and asparagus, or sweet potato, onion, cashew cheese quesadillas, or how about spicy enchiladas with mushrooms, cashew cheese and a side of sautéed greens and beans. Yum!
Blue Barn provides locally sourced seasonal food and has multiple locations on Polk St, Chestnut St and in Marin. I wanted to mention Blue Barn mainly for their delicious salads. Many of you may be familiar with their Detox Salad if you have tried out the RA-RA Cleanse. This salad includes chicory, spinach, dino kale, quinoa, carrot, cucumber, celery, apple, radish, dried cranberries, flax mix, and an açai lemon vinaigrette. While this salad is likely their healthiest, they have other salads that will catch your eye. If you are into sandwiches and not gluten-free they have a wide variety to choose from.
CAN CAN's RA RA Cleanse
Source, located on Division St, is a wonderful place to dine. Their menu is entirely vegetarian and everything can be made vegan upon request. They also have many gluten-free and raw food options. They offer a wide variety of foods, from burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, dosadillas, salads and lots of creative entrées. I personally love their Tri Color Quinoa Salad that comes with greens, grilled veggies, avocado, olive and fresh herbs, yum! This restaurant is all about the healing energy of food. They even offer healing cordials to help balance out your chakras!
Herbivore is a 100% vegan restaurant that offers a variety of cuisine with multiple locations on Valencia St, Divisadero St, as well as in Berkeley. Herbivore was one of the first restaurants I tried when I first moved to San Francisco in 2008. And while I am not vegan, I love their Shawarma wrap. They have many gluten-free options as well and they are now offering quinoa pasta as an alternative in their pasta dishes.
If you are looking for healthy, gourmet food, but you don’t feel like cooking or leaving the house, Munchery is always a viable option, they have gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and organic options. Their kitchen provides professional chef made food directly to your door. Yes, please! Who doesn’t need a break once in a while? So stay on track and indulge at the same time with their ever-changing menu. An added bonus is that they also sell our delicious CAN CAN Nut Milk.
All in all there are many more restaurants in San Francisco to try than this list alone. We are so lucky to live in a place where there are so many diverse food choices. Hopefully this has inspired you to eat healthy inside the home and when you’re out with your partner or friends.
